La deonomastica anglo-tedesca negli elenchi della Commissione per l'italianità della lingua (1941-1943)

Abstract

This paper attempts to analyse the lexicological-translational treatment of British, American and German deonymics by the Commissione per l’italianità della lingua (1941-1943), strongly backed by the fascist government leadership of the period. As a matter of fact, not all words suffered the same treatment: coercive measures had different characteristics and were intertwined with linguistic diffusion and diachronic parameters. Place names, anthroponomy and brand names sometimes maintained the morphology of the heritage language, sometimes underwent adaptation (graphic, phonetic or morphophonemic) and at times completely lacked deonymic characteristics to arrive at articulated, descriptive circumlocutions. The variety offers a worthy lexicological outcome, especially when seen in relation to the treatment accorded to French deonymics and indeed to the more general results of the self-sufficient campaign.
