abstract

The charm of the letters of and to Machiavelli consists, as other epistolaries before XVI Century, in their mix between the public life of the "Segretario" and his private and intimate existence. Nowadays we have 340 of them in total, of which 80 written by Machiavelli, from 1497 to 1527. It is possible to divide them in three parts: the letters of and to Machiavelli's friend and collegues in the Cancelleria (before 1512); the ones of and to Francesco Vettori, after 1512; the ones of and to Francesco Guicciardini, in the last years of Machiavelli's life. They are so important not only for the usefull facts and oddities about Machiavelli that provide us, but also because some of them are real literary pages: as Ezio Raimondi had already pointed out, in fact, the peculiar feature and the beautiful aspect of these letters is above all their theatrical energy and their expressive strength, that link them to the other great works of Machiavelli.
