Defeng Xie (1906-1980), historian and translator. Xie studied English and History in Shanghai during the 1920s, and taught English at Fudan University (Shanghai) from 1931 until 1937, when he returned to his hometown in Hunan Province due to the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War, teaching in local high schools. In 1947 he joined Hunan University (Changsha) as an English instructor and became Professor of History at Hunan Normal University in 1953. Despite his full adherence to Marxism, he fell victim to the Maoist purges, yet survived. Besides Thucydides, he translated Appian's Roman History and several other works of modern Western historical scholarship.
