Václav Bahník (1918-2003), classical philologist and translator. After completing his secondary education in Mladá Boleslav, Bahník was arrested in November 1939 by Nazi authorities in connection with student protests, and spent two years in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Following the war, he taught Latin and Italian at the Gymnasium in Liberec, northern Bohemia (1946-1975). He translated texts from ancient Greek, Latin, and Italian: his translations include works by Cicero, Apuleius, Seneca the Younger, Quintilian, Lucian, Plutarch, Boethius, Theophylact Simocatta, as well as later authors such as Marco Polo, Jacobus de Voragine, and Luigi Pirandello.

The translation is based on the text established by Stuart Jones-Powell 1942. The book was reissued in 2025, with a new afterword by Milan Znoj – see Bahník 2025.

With a foreword by Jan Pečírka (1926-1993), historian and classical philologist. Pečírka's research interests included the economic and social history of archaic Greece and the historiography of the classical period. He was a long-time member of the editorial board of the journal Eirene.
