Henry Stuart Jones (1867-1939), classical scholar and lexicographer. From 1890 to 1906, Stuart Jones was a Fellow of Trinity College, and between 1903 and 1905, he served as Director of the British School at Rome. In 1919, he was appointed Camden Professor of Ancient History and became a Fellow of Brasenose College, Oxford. In 1927, he assumed the position of Principal of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. He was knighted in 1933. A Fellow of the British Academy from 1915, he also served as President of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies from 1926 to 1929. From 1925 to 1940, he was the editor-in-chief of the new edition of Liddell and Scott’s Greek-English Lexicon. ODNB

John Enoch Powell (1912-1998), politician, classical scholar, and poet. At the age of just twenty-five, Powell was appointed Professor of Greek at the University of Sydney (1938). With the outbreak of World War II, he returned to England and enlisted in the army as a private, eventually rising to the rank of brigadier. He played a strategic role in the North African campaign and later served in India. After the war, Powell entered politics with the Conservative Party, serving as MP from 1950 to 1974, and later with the Ulster Unionist Party until 1987. He was Minister of Health from 1960 to 1963 under Harold Macmillan. He became particularly well known for his strong opposition to immigration from former British colonies. In his most famous speech – the so-called Rivers of Blood Speech – he warned of a future marked by racial tension and urban unrest in Britain, echoing the turmoil then unfolding in the United States. He also authored a Lexicon to Herodotus and translated Herodotus in the English of King James Bible. ODBN
