Václav Bahník (1918-2003), classical philologist and translator. After completing his secondary education in Mladá Boleslav, Bahník was arrested in November 1939 by Nazi authorities in connection with student protests, and spent two years in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Following the war, he taught Latin and Italian at the Gymnasium in Liberec, northern Bohemia (1946-1975). He translated texts from ancient Greek, Latin, and Italian: his translations include works by Cicero, Apuleius, Seneca the Younger, Quintilian, Lucian, Plutarch, Boethius, Theophylact Simocatta, as well as later authors such as Marco Polo, Jacobus de Voragine, and Luigi Pirandello.

Reissue of Bahník 1977, with a a new afterword by Milan Znoj (1952-), political philosopher and historian of ideas. Znoj is a senior researcher at the Institute of Philosophy of the Czech Academy of Sciences. His work focuses on political philosophy, the legitimacy of modern democracy, the tradition of Czech liberalism, and the philosophical legacies of Kant and Hegel.
