Research Article | A performance in Madrid of the dramatic works of Francesc Fontanella (1738)
Abstract
The article presents the recent discovery of a printed translation into Spanish of the two most important plays by the Catalan Baroque playwright Francesc Fontanella (1622‑1681). Both plays were performed in Madrid in 1738 on the occasion of the wedding of Charles of Bourbon (King of the Two Sicilies, future Charles III of Spain) to Maria Amalia of Saxony, daughter of the King of Poland. We will analyse the literary and operatic context of the celebration, the characteristics of the translation in relation to the Catalan originals, the musical aspect of the pieces (accentuated in the Spanish version), some aspects of the staging, and the possible involvement of Fray Agustín Eura.
