Abstract
A survey of the critical problems faced by Catalan literary critics and historians alike, with special attention paid to the contribution by professor Giuseppe Grilli, a contribution to the debate that has been neither minor nor insignificant. In fact his writing has done much to enhance local debates and link them to European and World trends, always from a comparative perspective. The conclusion is that one must be a comparatist. Catalan literature should be studied from a comparative perspective. This would be a crucial contribution to enhance Catalan literature in a European context and it would also be decisive to define a concept of European literature.
