Presentazione

Quotidiana: Journal for the Study of Lived Religion is an interdisciplinary, biannual, open-access journal published by Edizioni Ca’ Foscari Venice University Press. Quotidiana, which is the official publication of the Center for the Study of Lived Religion at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, is dedicated to the academic study of the everyday religious practices of people – both past and present – from around the world. Although the journal will accept papers on a wide range of topics related to lived religion, it focuses on six central, comparative aspects of quotidian practice: (1) cultural adaptation, appropriation, and differentiation; (2) religious competence and specialization; (3) situational or contextual meaning; (4) materiality, visuality, and textuality; (5) gender and race; and (6) landscape. Quotidiana will also privilege studies on material artifacts (e.g., amulets, tokens, and manuscripts), archaeological contexts, and religious performances as well as papers that offer critical assessments of the primary terms, theories, and methods in the study of lived religion. In sum, Quotidiana constitutes an interdisciplinary venue for examining lived religious beliefs, experiences, performances, and interactions critically and comparatively within and across all traditions, regions, and times. There are academic journals, whose research interests intersect with some of Quotidiana’s main emphases (e.g., cultural appropriation; materiality; theory and method in the study of religion): Sociology of Religion; Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion; Material Religion; Method & Theory in the Study of Religion; however, the particular coordination of themes, comparison, methods, and theories related to the study of lived religion in Quotidiana make it unique. In addition to articles submitted on one or more of the six primary themes (or related topics), the editorial board envisions special issues, which synthesize (1) rigorous analysis of sources pertaining to lived religion (especially material artifacts) and (2) theoretical, methodological, comparative reflection on those sources. For instance, a special issue of the journal might deal with the category amulet across diverse cultural and temporal contexts (e.g., the ancient Mediterranean, medieval England, early imperial China, and modern Haiti). Contributors will be asked not only to isolate and analyze the materials, rituals, and performances deemed “amuletic” within their disciplinary structures, but also to reflect critically on the role of the category amulet within that discipline. How do amulets relate to the disciplinary canon of your field? Are amuletic practices considered central or marginal? To what extent do categories such as “religion” and “magic” structure the collection and analysis of amulets in your discipline? Readers of such a volume will, therefore, have access to a comparative and analytically robust assessment of the rubric “amulet”, both in terms of diverse collections of ritual objects and as a manifoldly contested category of scholarly imagination. The broad range of disciplinary emphases and specializations (e.g., languages, periods, regions, and cultures) that characterizes DSAAM make it the ideal department for hosting Quotidiana. In fact, it was precisely this rich diversity of interests in DSAAM that inspired me in the first place to create the Center for the Study of Lived Religion and, by extension, Quotidiana.
