Abstract

This chapter examines the historical development and persistence of Italy’s North-South divide in income, wealth, labour productivity, and employment. It shows that regional disparities are deeply rooted in the unbalanced industrial development that began in the late nineteenth century. Despite brief phases of convergence, particularly during the 1960s, the economic divide between the Centre-North and the South has remained largely unchanged. Current differences in productivity, wages, and prices continue to reinforce this divide, shaping two structurally distinct ‘Italies’ with socio-economic consequences for national cohesion and development.
