Abstract

Regional inequalities in Italy are strong and deep-rooted; they have not reduced in 160 years and over time have taken the form of a structural dualism between South and Centre-North that has marked the growth path of the entire country. The most evident manifestation of these inequalities is in the rates of employment and participation particularly affecting young women in the South. Public policies, both state and regional, have failed, and not due to lack of resources. The debate on the causes of these persistent inequalities remains open.
