Italian Teaching in Cameroon

Abstract

In Cameroon, Italian is increasingly taught in universities, schools and language centres. The main reasons for learning Italian are of a practical order rather than a cultural one, as a means for a better future or professional achievements. Italianisms are widespread in the country, on shop signs and posters and so on, mainly with reference with food, fashion and also sport. Much of the fascination of Italian language lies in its novelty compared to more common foreign languages like English or French. A certain lack of institutional support is its greatest frailty.
