Abstract

This study investigates the historical significance of salt production in the coastal landscapes of Adriatic Apulia from the Roman period to the early Middle Ages. Despite scarce written records and limited archaeological evidence, Apulia's coastal wetlands played a central role in salt production, particularly around the Salpi Lagoon. Through ecological conditions conducive to salt extraction, the lagoon supported both economic and settlement patterns, reflecting broader economic strategies in Roman and later periods. In particular, the research reveals the enduring impact of salt on local economies, settlement continuity, and socio-environmental relationships in early medieval Apulia.
