Abstract

This paper will analyse fiscal lands through the geographical distribution of these lands in eastern Emilia and the Mantuan Oltrepò. We will thus highlight the different strategies adopted by individual rulers from the late Lombard to the Carolingian age (688‑887). Subsequently, we will expand the view to the principal landlords present in the area to reconstruct as broad a picture as possible. Finally, we will analyse mentions of ports and markets about the ancient waterways of the medieval period.
