Abstract

The filing system of the amphorae considered among the research topics of the PRIN Food and S.T.O.N.E.S. – especially those dating from the end of Late Antiquity to the early Middle Ages (with an extended fork that also includes the Middle and Late Middle Ages) – has been linked to a specific WebGIS that can be constantly updated remotely by the various study groups. This feature imposed the choice of working with a database identified by a table in Office Open XML format, a datasheet with a series of fields identified on the basis of the criterion of conciseness and that of the complexity of the subject to be treated. It is mainly composed of the data sheet, divided into seven thematic ‘macro-sections’ that allow the recording of general data, information on the context of the amphorae’s origin, quantitative data (numerical description), the description of the find with reference to the macro-class, class, form and type (if any), and finally the records dedicated to the production, archaeometric data, dating and bibliography.
