Abstract

This paper attempts to identify possible echoes of Venantius Fortunatus in the poetic production of Giovanni Pontano, with particular attention to Parthenopeus, De laudibus divinis, De tumulis, and Eridanus. It analyses several stylistic and thematic features that characterize the Merovingian poet’s work, such as topoi (morte prematura), loci similes, a penchant for accumulation, onomastic games, and alliterative paronomasies that recur and characterize Pontano’s later poetic collections (De tumulis and Eridanus).
