Abstract

During the first half of the 19th century, about 150 shipwrecks were recorded on the coasts of Chile, among which those that occurred to two French whalers, the La Rose in 1833 and La Confiance in 1834 on the coasts of Arauco, dominated at that time by Mapuche groups. We analyze contacts between the shipwrecked and the local inhabitants of the Araucanian coast as they were represented in the press, the negotiations carried out to protect the crews by consular authorities in parliaments with the indigenous peoples, and the emergence of a national discourse on the need to occupy and incorporate those territories.
