Abstract

The text analyzes four accidents as milestones in the expansion of the Chilean State in the Mapuche territory. From the shipwreck of the Joven Daniel (1850) to the railroad incident in Cholchol (1902) and the wreck of the steamers Cautín (1948) and Helvetia (1948), accidents mark the transition from naval to land transportation and the triumph of railroads and highways. The last shipwreck in Lake Maihue (2005) reveals the historical persistence of an interpretation of accidents based on a teleology of progress, but also on the suspicion of hidden intentions behind the opacity of causes that brings them closer to the figure of the trap.
