Il capitolo ripercorre il formarsi dell’opinione critica dominante e anzi unica in ordine alla struttura della tetralogia dionisiaca come unione di tre tragedie e un dramma satiresco finale. Se ne raccolgono e commentano esemplari enunciazioni da Isaac Casaubon a Gottfried Hermann alla critica più recente (Pickard-Cambridge) e contemporanea, mostrando come la nettezza delle formulazioni non vada di pari passo con la solidità e l’ampiezza delle dimostrazioni addotte.
