Aesch. Sept. 712-19: questioni critico-testuali
Abstract
The paper analyses and discusses the main textual-critical problems of Aeschylus, Seven Against Thebes 712-19, starting from the results of the new repertory of conjectures to the text of the tragedy. The paradosis can be defended not only for its grammatical accuracy, but also because it conforms to the characters’ modes of communication. The transmitted text effectively conveys the women’s tension in imploring the king’s consideration. Some suggestive corrective proposals aim to simplify the diction (e.g. 713) or syntax (e.g. 712, 719) of the dialogue, whose characteristic is instead its essentiality, reflecting the clarity of the positions of Eteocles and the Chorus.
