Abstract

The chapter explores Chinese travel writing as a product of early twentieth‑century Sino-European exchanges, focusing on Li Jianwu’s Letters from a Journey to Italy. Set against the backdrop of Chinese intellectual mobility and study‑abroad programs after 1912, it examines how Italy – though a minor destination – became a site of artistic and cultural exploration. The study highlights Li’s work as a key example of modern Chinese travel writing and a lens on Republican-era transnational encounters.
