Verso una giustizia più-che-umana: il contributo degli Human-Animal Studies

Abstract

This chapter discusses the development and significance of Human-Animal Studies, an interdisciplinary field that explores the complex relationships between humans and non-human animals. Emerging in the 1970s, HAS critique anthropocentric perspectives rooted in Western modern thought, which historically relegated animals to passive objects at the service of humans. The chapter traces the field’s development emphasizing the shift from an instrumental view of animals to approaches recognizing their agency. The chapter concludes by discussing how Human-Animal Studies are political and how they contribute to building a novel idea of justice in more-than-human terms – an ongoing project that calls for inclusive policies and ethical consideration of non-human animals.
