Abstract

This chapter explores the protection of non-human animal rights through the lens of international heritage law – a relatively underexplored perspective within legal scholarship. While the legal protection of animals is often discussed in the contexts of environmental law, animal welfare law, or human rights frameworks, this contribution shifts the focus to international cultural heritage law, asking whether and how it can provide legal safeguards for non-human animals. In particular, the contribution assesses the regimes of UNESCO Convention of 1972, the World Heritage Convention, and the 2003 UNESCO Convention on intangible cultural heritage.
