Riflessioni biografiche ed esperienze doganali sotto l’Impero (Italia, 1805-11)
Abstract
This paper explores a lesser-known aspect of Jacques Boucher de Perthes, renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to prehistoric archaeology in nineteenth century France: his experiences as a customs officer in Napoleonic Italy. Through an analysis of his personal correspondence, collected in Sous dix rois, we gain unique insights into the daily life of a customs official and the administrative practices of the era. Moreover, this study reveals his reflections on Italian society under French rule, broadens our perspective on his diverse intellectual pursuits and sheds light on the flourishing genre of biography in nineteenth-century France and Europe.
