Capitolo | Per lo spazio culturale e cancelleresco veneziano del primo Trecento: tra Bonincontro, Castellano, Pietro Calò da Chioggia (e Marin Sanudo)
Abstract
The article investigates the main intellectual networks active in Venice in the early fourteenth century, particularly around chancery and religious circles. The investigation focuses on the figure of the notary Bonincontro, author of a Latin history on the mythical affair of the pacification between Pope Alexander III and Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. The writing of this history, its circulation, and Bonincontro’s intellectual affair turn out to be significant because they weld these different milieus together at a time when Venice was rethinking its own history and projecting itself anew toward the Mediterranean.
