Contesti altomedievali di ambito urbano

Abstract

A study has been undertaken of recent archaeological sites, distributed in different areas in the city of Ravenna. This examination has offered explanations regarding  aspects of long-term settlement continuity in the ancient urban centre from the times of Early Roman Empire of to the Early Middle Ages and beyond. In some cases, the areas were abandoned during the 6th to 7th Centuries, after to be being used as cemeteries, whereas in others, such as the excavation in Anita Garibaldi Square, the settlements were continuous although showing variations in the use of structures and buildings. The development of high-level homes in the period between the 7th and 10th Centuries at the site of Ravenna’s Piazza Traversari allows us to recognize interesting aspects of urban residential development as well as of those regarding economics and commerce.
