Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679), philosopher, educated at Oxford and later a tutor to aristocratic families, best known for his political philosophy. Influenced by thinkers like Galileo and Descartes, Hobbes developed a materialistic and mechanistic view of the world. During the English Civil War, he fled to France, where he wrote Leviathan (1651), his most famous work, which laid the foundation for modern political theory and social contract philosophy. Upon returning to England, he remained influential despite ongoing controversy over his views on religion and politics. The first and the last works he published are translations of Greek authors: Thucydides (1629) and Homer (1673-1677). ODNB

Translation from Hobbes 1629, with an introduction, by Richard Schlatter (1912-1987), historian, specialized in early modern English history and political thought. Schlatter taught at Rutgers University. His research focused particularly on seventeenth-century England, including questions of political authority, property, and intellectual history.
