Selection of speeches from Jowett 1881, with an Introduction by Gilbert Murray (1866-1957), classical scholar. In 1889, at the age of twenty-three, Murray was appointed Professor of Greek at the University of Glasgow. In 1908 he succeeded Lewis Campbell as Regius Professor of Greek at the University of Oxford, a position he held until 1936. Murray was especially renowned for his English verse translations of Greek tragedy, including plays by Euripides, Aeschylus, and Sophocles. Beyond philology, Murray was active in public life. He was a strong advocate of internationalism and a supporter of the League of Nations, working alongside figures connected with what later became Chatham House.
