With a preface by Pierre Vidal-Naquet (1930-2006), historian. Vidal-Naquet studied at the École Normale Supérieure. He held academic positions at several institutions, including the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris, where he was directeur d’études. Vidal-Naquet collaborated extensively with Jean-Pierre Vernant, and together they played a central role in applying structuralist approaches to the study of Greek antiquity. Their co-authored works, such as Myth and Tragedy in Ancient Greece, had a lasting impact on the field. His individual research included studies on Athenian democracy, the Sophists, and the relationship between myth and history in classical literature. Alongside his scholarly work, Vidal-Naquet was a prominent public intellectual and a committed political activist. He opposed the French use of torture during the Algerian War and later denounced Holocaust denial, contributing essays and interventions that linked historical scholarship with contemporary ethical concerns.
