Introduction by Jacqueline de Romilly, née David (1913-2010), classical philologist, historian. de Romilly studied at the École normale supérieure and earned her doctorate with a thesis on Thucydides. Professor first at the University of Lille and then at the Sorbonne, she became the first woman to teach at the Collège de France (1973) and the second woman elected to the Académie française (1988). Her scholarly work focused on Greek historiography, tragedy, and political thought, particularly Thucydides. Among her major works are Thucydide et l’impérialisme athénien (1947) and La Construction de la vérité chez Thucydide (1990). She also published widely on Aeschylus and Herodotus. Collège de France.
