Evelyn Abbott (1843-1901), classical scholar and historian. Educated at Balliol College, Oxford, where he excelled in classics and won the Gaisford Prize for Greek verse (1864), Abbott suffered a spinal injury in a hurdle race in 1866 that left him permanently paralysed. After an early teaching post at Clifton College, he was invited in 1873 by Benjamin Jowett, Master of Balliol and his lifelong friend, to return to Oxford. Elected Fellow and Tutor of Balliol in 1874, Abbott became a central figure in the college's academic life, teaching Latin, Greek, and later Greek history. He was also Jowett Lecturer in Greek (from 1895), College Librarian (1881-1897), and junior bursar (1882). Abbott was a prolific author and editor, fluent in German and deeply engaged with contemporary German scholarship. His major original work, the three-volume History of Greece (1888-1900), reflected a critical, sceptical approach to Homer and early Greek history. He also co-authored a biography of Jowett with Lewis Campbell (1897), evidencing their close intellectual relationship. ODNB

William Henry Forbes (ca. 1850-1914), classical scholar. Forbes was elected Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford, in 1873, receiving his B.A. in the same year and M.A. in 1876. At Balliol, he served as lecturer and classical tutor. His academic work included studies on Thucydides.
