Translation by Horneffer 1912, revised by Strasburger. Horneffer published his translation of the first four books of Thucydides in 1912; the remaining books were found in manuscript form and revised by Gisela Strasburger.

The volume includes an introduction by Hermann Strasburger (1909-1985), ancient historian. Strasburger earned his doctorate in 1931 under Matthias Gelzer with a dissertation on Cicero. Despite his early academic promise, he was denied habilitation in 1933 due to his Jewish ancestry and continued his research independently in Freiburg and Frankfurt. Drafted into military service in 1940, he was severely wounded on the Eastern Front in 1943 and spent the remainder of the war in hospitals and as a prisoner of war. After the war, he held professorships in Frankfurt and later in Freiburg. Strasburger's scholarship focused primarily on late Republican Rome, though he also made significant contributions to the study of Greek historiography. DB
