Rex Warner (1905-1986), writer, teacher, and translator, Professor at the University of Connecticut for eleven years starting in 1962. Warner studied Classics at Oxford. Some of his early politically engaged works condemned fascist and Nazi regimes. Later, he focused on historical novels set in the classical world – his Imperial Caesar, published in 1960, won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for literature. During World War II, he served in the British Home Guard. From 1945 to 1947, Warner was director of the British Institute in Athens. He also translated Aeschylus, Euripides, and Plutarch. ODBN

Moses Israel Finley (1912-1986), classical scholar, historian, and sociologist. Finley began his academic career at Syracuse University and earned a Master's degree in Public Law from Columbia University. He was briefly associated with the Institute for Social Research (Frankfurt School), collaborating with figures such as Max Horkheimer. From 1948 to 1952, he taught at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, while pursuing a Ph.D. in History at Columbia. In the McCarthy era, Finley came under scrutiny for alleged communist affiliations. In 1952, after invoking the Fifth Amendment during questioning about his political associations, he was dismissed from his post at Rutgers. He subsequently moved to the United Kingdom and joined the University of Cambridge, where he served as Professor of Ancient History from 1970 to 1979 and as Master of Darwin College from 1976 to 1982. He was knighted in 1979, appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), and elected Fellow of the British Academy (FBA). ODBN
