Tradurre Hadewijch: la mistica dell’amore nella libertà della lingua divina
Abstract
The translation of mystical literature poses particularly complex challenges, as it demands a nuanced interplay between linguistic proficiency and hermeneutic sensitivity. While Translation Studies have undergone significant interdisciplinary expansion, their application within the field of Religious Studies remains largely peripheral. The absence of a dedicated theoretical framework and specific methodological guidelines only heightens the complexity of the translator’s task. This essay seeks to address these issues by analyzing the challenges encountered during the translation of the Liederen by Hadewijch of Antwerp (thirteenth century). To this end, a biographical and intellectual contextualization of the author, together with an examination of the stylistic and conceptual dimensions of her work, will help elucidate the translation strategies employed and the ratio behind them – offering, in turn, a broader reflection on the distinctive demands of translating this particular literary genre.
