abstract

The inscription is included among the accounts of the naopoioi of Delphi, which document the offerings for the reconstruction of the temple of Apollo after the catastrophe that struck the site around 373 BCE. The marble slab is part of an archaic temple gutter. The epigraph attests a list of eparchai sent to the sanctuary by Sparta and some citizens between 337/336 and 336/335 BCE. The extraordinary nature of the Spartan offering is due to the mention of King Cleomenes II, who personally donated 510 drachmas to the temple at a decisive moment for Sparta, immediately after the assassination of his rival Philip II of Macedon.
