Abstract
The article examines the methodological approaches adopted in modern scholarship to study the intertextual relationship between Pindar and Aeschylus. The hypothesis of a rivalry between the two poets at the court of Hieron of Syracuse – an idea rooted in ancient biographical sources and recently invoked to explain intertextual links between Pythian 1 and Persae – is reassessed in light of the early formation of a poetic repertoire celebrating the Persian Wars, as suggested by comparison with epigrams attributed to Simonides. Pind. fr. 78 M. may also be situated within this framework, as may the use of the mythic exemplum of Typhoeus/Typhon in both Pindar and Aeschylus.
