Abstract

The contribution, starting from a picture of the latest news in research on Venantius’ poetry, focuses on verse epitaphs of the fourth book of Venantius’ Carmina, trying to individuate formulas and patterns coming from the language of the poetical epigraphs of late antiquity and checking their afterlife in Carolingian epitaphs. The materials are sorted by typologies such as ‘basic language’, ‘epic formulas’, ‘environmental patterns’, ‘Alcuinian spreading’, ‘ideological contrapositions’, ‘dual use’ (same text in two different epigraphs). The last subchapter is dedicated to the reuse of Venantius’ formulas in the epitaph of the ‘paladin’ Roland in the twelfth century Historia Turpini and its versification Karolellus.
