2 • Safavid Letters to Venice
Abstract
A letter’s material and visual characteristics did more than connote magnificence: they were essential to the meaning of the texts. The type and quality of the paper, the colour of the ink, the materials with which the letters were bound, the way in which the letter was folded all reflected the social distance between the sender and recipient.
