La rovina in commedia. Grottesco satirico e dantesco di Jacovitti
abstract
The illustration of the Commedia has a very long history, frequently involving attempts to bring Dante’s epic poem up to date, thereby making it more relevant to the present day. The essay studies a relatively recent parody of Dante’s masterpiece, devised in 1947 by the satirical cartoonist Benito Jacovitti and published in the Italian satirical weekly magazine Belzebù. Jacovitti, who created a vast number of humorous comic strips populated by bizarre and grotesque characters, satirised the political situation of post-war Italy in two pages packed with clever visual gags and tongue-in-cheek allusions to current events.
