Dedication to Dionysus in the Morgantina Theatre

Abstract

Morgantina theatre had a complex architectural history, closely related to the construction of monuments in the agora that dates back to the central years of the third century BC. This chronology is corroborated also by the palaeography of the building dedication, which is inscribed on the block of the tenth row of steps next to the third cuneus. The epigraph bears the name of the person who dedicated it, one Archelas, son of Eukleidas; then it mentions Dionysus, to whom the theatre is dedicated.
