Abstract

This chapter examines the increasingly relevant and particularly complex relationship between the World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) push for trade liberalisation and European Union’s (EU) regulatory efforts to uphold high animal welfare standards. The analysis centres on Article XX of GATT 1994 and other legal mechanisms that permit animal welfare measures within the framework of international trade law (ITL). The chapter advocates for a more integrated approach to animal welfare in ITL, including the inclusion of dedicated clauses in international agreements, building on models already implemented by the EU.
