Abstract

This chapter critically examines the anthropocentric foundations of international and EU law concerning the protection of non-human animals. It highlights the fragmentation of the legal instruments in force, the lack of global regulation, and the importance of emerging ecocentric approaches. The chapter provides an overview of the main legal instruments adopted at the international and EU levels. Despite some progress, the law still perpetuates inter- and intra-species discrimination. The chapter argues that a radical rethinking of consolidated legal categories is needed to address the ecological crisis and promote inclusive justice.
