3 • The Neolithization as Seen from the East

Abstract

This chapter explores several episodes of agricultural dispersal in the region. The Criș culture, Linear Pottery culture, and Early Trypillians each contributed to the domestication of the Carpathian-Dnieper region, each in distinct ways – through unique centres of dispersal, varying speeds of expansion, and different directions of penetration. Each group introduced a specific set of cultivated plants and domesticated animals to the region. These expansion events were often remarkably rapid, making it challenging to distinguish between earlier and later sites across vast areas of near-simultaneous colonisation.
