Les femmes dangereuses et la cité

Abstract

The study concludes with this third section, in which the threads of analysis are brought together and the validity of the hypotheses and research method are tested. A reflection is developed here on the political functions of representations of dangerous women in relation to forms of marriage, inheritance and dowry in Athens and, more generally, in relation to the political structures, forms of citizenship, customs and laws of the city between the archaic and classical periods. This section also examines the mechanisms and developments of the ideology of the city in relation to gender relations, paying particular attention to the use of the ‘idea of nature’ to justify some structures of domination within the democratic polis.
