Monograph | The Necessary Anomaly
Chapter | 1 • Les femmes grecques et leurs représentations
Abstract
Chapter 1, which begins the first part of the book, is an introduction to the general theme and an illustration of the methodology and the main categories of analysis used in the course of the research. The concept of gynophobia is examined, also in relation to contemporary studies on emotions in the Ancient World, plus misogyny; the question of the use of analogy and anachronism as instruments of historical analysis is then addressed; the physiognomy of the social group ‘women’ under investigation in the historical context examined and in the whole of its social relations is clarified. The chapter then evaluates the orientation of gender studies in the social sciences and in particular in the historiography of the ancient world, especially since the 1970s. This is followed by a brief summary of the main debates concerning the material living conditions of ancient women citizens, their representations and the social relations between the sexes in the poleis of ancient Greece and especially in Athens, with a focus on the historiographical trends of the last thirty years. The chapter ends with an overview of the sources (literary, medical, philosophical, epigraphic, paremiographical and iconographic) on ancient women and proposes a brief excursus on the representations of female figures in the archaic period (Homer, Hesiod, lyric poetry) and the classical period (Athenian theatre, corpus Hippocraticum, Aristotle and Xenophon).
