Content: Pericles’ Funeral Oration

Ferdinand Stiebitz (1894-1961), classical philologist. During the First World War Stiebitz served in the Austro-Hungarian army and was wounded on the Eastern Front. After the war and his university studies, he taught at gymnasia in Královské Vinohrady (1920-1922) and Košice (1922-1924), before moving to Brno. From 1936 until his death he taught at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno, becoming Professor in 1945 and serving as Dean in 1947-1948. A prolific translator, Stiebitz produced Czech versions of early Greek poetry, Aristophanes, selected Greek tragedies, Ovid, Petronius, Plutarch, Minucius Felix, and Apuleius. His translation of Pericles' Funeral Oration was recited in the months immediately following the end of the Second World War at the Czech National Theatre, during a memorial for the victims of Nazi persecution.

Translation of Thuc. 2.34.1-47.1 8 (Pericles' Funeral Oration). Stiebitz intended to continue his work on Thucydides, but the project remained incomplete. Among his papers, preserved in the Masaryk Institute and Archives of the Czech Academy of Sciences (collection NAD 425), two undated manuscripts (inv. nos. 275 and 276) survive. Manuscript 275 contains a Czech translation of Thuc. 1.1.1-2, 13.1-19, 23.6, 67.1-88, 1.139.3-2.1, 2.9.1-14.2, 17.1-28, 30.1-3, 34.1-53.4, 57.1-2, 59.1-3, and 65.1-13, accompanied by brief summaries of the intervening sections. Manuscript 276, written no earlier than 1947-1948, contains a translation of Thuc. 1.1.1-96.2.
