Masaaki Kubo (1930-), classical scholar, Emeritus Professor of the University of Tokyo and former President of the Japan Academy. After graduating from Harvard University, Kubo taught for many years at the University of Tokyo, later serving as President of the Tōhoku University of Art and Design. He translated into Japanese several classical authors, among them Thucydides, Aeschylus and Sophocles. Kubo was decorated with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, for his contributions to classical scholarship.

Translation from Kubo 1966-1967, with a new introduction by Mariko Sakurai (1943-), Emeritus Professor at the Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology, University of Tokyo. A specialist in ancient Greek history and historiography, Sakurai published on Athenian society, the structures of the polis, and the role of women and non-citizens in classical Greece.
