Yuanguo He (1966-), historian and Professor of Classics at the School of History, Wuhan University, specialising in ancient Greek and Roman history. His research interests include Greek historiography, comparative intellectual history (esp. Greek and Chinese philosophical traditions), and the social history of ancient Greece. He also received in 2011 a Honorary Certificate for the Promotion of Greek Culture from the Greek Ambassador to China.

The translation is followed by five appendices containing historical and translation notes. A revised translation was published in 2024 – see He 2024.
