Content: Pericles’ Funeral Oration

Wolfgang Otto Bernhard Schadewaldt (1900-1974), classical philologist and translator. Schadewaldt studied at the University of Berlin and became Professor of Classical Philology at Königsberg in 1928, moving the following year to Freiburg (1929-1934), Leipzig (1934-1941), Berlin (1941-1950) and, finally, Tübingen (1950-1968). Throughout his long and prolific career, he published several books, including Die Geschichtsschreibung des Thukydides (1929). Besides Thucydides, he also translated Homer. BDCS

The volume provides a translation of Thuc. 2.34-46 (Pericles' Funeral Oration) by Schadewaldt and includes an essay on Pericles' Funeral Oration edited by Konrad Gaiser (1929-1988), classical scholar, Professor at the University of Tübingen. Gaiser's research focused on Plato's teaching and the reconstruction of unwritten doctrines attributed to the Platonic Academy.
