Mauriz Schuster (1879-1952), classical philologist and secondary school teacher. Schuster received his doctorate in 1903 from the University of Vienna and worked for many years as a Gymnasiallehrer in various Austrian cities. He habilitated at the University of Vienna in 1930 and subsequently lectured there as a Privatdozent and later as an associate professor. Schuster's research focused primarily on Latin literature, especially the poets Catullus, Propertius, and Tibullus, as well as Pliny the Younger. He contributed numerous entries to Pauly's Realencyclopädie der classischen Altertumswissenschaft and collaborated on the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae. In addition to classical philology, Schuster also produced work on the Viennese dialect, including a dictionary of older Viennese expressions. DB
